Walking in Oakland

WOBO is working with the Urban Paths Project to help inventory and get the historical stairways around the city repaired. Want to help? Check out the Urban Paths Project page

The Ideal Street
Ever thought about what your ideal street looks like? I’m sure it’s nice, a lot nicer than most streets we find around Oaktown. Trees, good lighting. Bike lanes, yes. How about a bench? Wide sidewalks that are clear of clutter, easy to walk down. Some nice big bulbouts so it’s easier to cross the street. WOBO is working on developing The Ideal Street a planning document that will help guide our efforts to make Oakland streets more walkable. We know a lot of the elements that we'd like to see, including:
* Traffic Calming Measures used often where appropriate.
* Well lit pedestrian walkways.
* Bike lanes, paths and routes.
* Benches, street trees, plantings and other street beautification measures.
* Bike racks, especially in business districts.

This planning document will help to leverage the Oakland Pedestrian Master Plan. Want to get involved in helping to develop it? Contact Doug Johnson He'd love to hear your thoughts and get you involved.

Want a free Walk Oakland! Map and Guide? (It's also a great bike map)
Join WOBO with a $50 donation and get it plus several cool stickers and WOBO membership. WOBO membership is good for discounts of many Oakland area bike and shoe shops (list coming soon).
