Dear Councilmember Kernighan, Thank you for voting to pass the Bicycle Master Plan update in December, 2007. I'm writing to you to request that you use your influence within the Public Works Committee to help fund the implementation of this great plan. Oakland city staff put excellent work into this document, but now we have to implement it. There are a number of inexpensive projects that will make Oakland a safer place to bike and walk. For example, there is no safe, convenient, quick way for bicyclists to get downtown to/from North Oakland. Broadway to downtown is one of the most travelled corridors in Oakland, even though it is also dangerous (Broadway and 27th was the third most dangerous in the city from 2000-2004-See the Bicycle Master Plan). ***Let's get some bike lanes on these streets - it's just paint!*** I'm asking you to push the Public Works department to install bike lanes on Broadway north of 40th Street and the Webster and Franklin couplet to connect a contiguous north south bike route.
The southern portion of the Webster-Franklin piece is also in your district.
We already have a draft environmental impact statement and a feasibility study. What are we waiting for? Thank you for your support of this important project!
