Dear Council President De La Fuente, Councilmembers Nadel, Brunner, Kernighan, Reid and Quan, and Mr. Wlassowsky, I want to thank you for adopting the Transportation Services Division's proposed re-allocation of the Measure B pedestrian and bicycle funds programed by the city. The re-allocation of funding is a fair split between pedestrian and bicyclist needs and I'm glad to hear that the city will be re-hiring the long vacant 3rd position in the Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities Program. This new engineering position that will be hired with these funds will help get a lot of new safety improvement projects completed in Oakland that have stagnated over the last few years. The position will also help us avoid the mistake of re-paving without implementing bicycle improvements that are included in the Bicycle Master Plan. We just can't afford any more poorly implemented projects such as the recent 27th St repaving job that failed to include bike lanes -- they now must be added back in during a separate project. Further, the lack of coordination wastes money and time, two things we cannot afford with such desperately scarce resources. Thanks again for approving the staff's recommendation and funding this important bicycle and pedestrian planning position at a time when the City budget is so constrained. Thank you,
