Next Monthly WOBO Meeting: Thursday, May 27th at 6:30pm

The next WOBO Meeting is Thursday, May 27th. We'll be slapping address labels on a couple thousand postcards to announce Oakland's sweetest Car-free Street Party – Oaklavía, June 27th. We could use your help with the mailing, and in exchange for your assistance you'll get our undying gratitude and free snacks!

DETAILS: WOBO HQ (436 14th Street) - 2nd fl Conf Room, 6:30pm.

WOBO Bike to the Movies Night - This Saturday!

"Jack Casey just landed in a world where the pressure's off. Risk is purely personal... and power is in your every move. Survival is an instinct you learn on the streets. And winning is a feeling you never lose."

Kevin Bacon is Jack Casey in the bike-tastic 80's film Quicksilver, and you're invited to see it free at WOBO's first-ever Bike to the Movies Night, Saturday night at Linden Street Brewery. Also on the bill: the short documentary The Scraper Bike King starring Oakland's own Baby Champ.

We'll have food, Linden Street beer and WOBO t-shirts (all available on a cash-only basis). Feel free to bring blankets, pillows, camping chairs and snacks, but please refrain from bringing in outside alcoholic beverages. And we'll have a killer sound system pumping out the movie's audio, but if you want an old-school drive-in experience, you can bring your own FM radio/headphones to listen to it that way.

What else? Grab your beret and feather your hair, because pre-Quicksilver we'll be staging our first-ever Kevin Bacon Look-Alike Contest. Bring your best Jack Casey for your shot at some sweet prizes.

"When you have nothing left, all you really need is the courage to get it back." And a bicycle!

DETAILS: Saturday, May 22nd, 7-11pm at Linden Street Brewery (95 Linden St). Free admission. Rain or shine. Proceeds benefit WOBO.

Oakland Rocks Bike to Work Day 2010

Bike To Work Day had everyone rolling. Cycling numbers for the East Bay were up 10% over last year! That's pretty amazing. Let's try and make every day Bike to Work Day!

WOBO had it goin' on during Bike to Work Day (BTWD) with three energizer stations, representation at the morning party at Frank Ogawa Plaza, and a booth at the Bike Away from Work party! Huge thanks to the many amazing volunteers who stuffed bags, baked tasty items, delivered materials to our energizer stations, led and rode in pedal pools, and were the face of WOBO at all the events. Thank you!

Special thanks go out to the Brown Couch Café, Ride SFO, Farley's East, Café Gabriela, and Kinetic Koffee for their generous donations. Please check out our photos and add yours at our BTWD Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/groups/wobo/.

Two Cyclist Fatalities in Oakland

WOBO staff and Board members were saddened to hear about two separate cyclist fatalities in Oakland in the last couple of weeks. Our sincerest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of Erik Fitzpatrick, 35, and Peter Webster, 60, both of whom were Oakland residents.

We are currently drafting an open letter to the Oakland City Council expressing our grief and emphasizing the urgent need for the city to fully implement Oakland's Bicycle Master Plan. In the coming days, look for us to post a letter (online) which you can edit and send to your Council Members.

We invite you to join us at next week's City Council Meeting – Tuesday, May 25th at 5:30pm – where we'll be making a public statement about the incidents.

Join Team WOBO in the Car-Free Challenge

Time is running out to sign up for the Car-Free Challenge, and we want you on Team WOBO! TransForm is behind this annual fundraising event which challenges people to drive less (or not at all) for one week.

This year's Challenge happens June 1-7, and now is the time to sign-up. If you take the Challenge, we'd love for you to do it as part of Team WOBO! You can sign up here (and then join Team WOBO) or you can sponsor one of WOBO's Car-Free Challenge participants.
