New Member Meet & Greet – This Thursday @: 6:30pm

Join us this Thursday for a New Member Meet-and-Greet at WOBO HQ (436 14th St, 2nd floor conference room). Come meet WOBO staff, volunteers and other members like yourself. We'll spend a little time letting folks know what we'll be up to this summer and fall, but mostly we'll just get to know one another and hear from everyone. Around 7:30 we'll head to the Layover on Franklin and transform our meet-and-greet into a social hour. We're looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Inaugural WOBO Oaklavía – Nothing but Love

Thanks to everyone who came out and helped to make WOBO's first Oaklavía a huge success! Over 4,000 people joined us in Downtown Oakland on June 27th. We biked, strolled, rolled, bounced, and danced in our streets.

If you weren't able to join us or just want to relive the good times, be sure to watch the Streetfilm about the event and check out the Media and Photo galleries on the WOBO Oaklavía website. Stay tuned for our 2011 routes and dates!

Starting in August – More WOBO Movie Nights!

WOBO is partnering with Linden Street Brewery and Oaklandish to bring you Oaklicious Movie Nights throughout the summer and fall. We're showing movies which have some combo of the following – biking, walking, Oakland, a Bay Area connection – and we want to hear what you'd like to see!

The next movie night will be August 21st and we'll be showing Rebels of Oakland, an HBO documentary about the Oakland Raiders in the 70's. The next dates after that will be September 18th and October 16th. What's showing in September and October? That's up to you – movie info and our "voting booth" are below.

DETAILS: Movies will be on the 3rd Saturday of the month at Linden Street Brewery. Free popcorn. Movie starts at dusk. Food and Beer sales benefit WOBO!

September and October Options: Return of the Scorcher & We Are Traffic: A couple of films about Critcal Mass.

  • American Flyers: A young Kevin Costner races his bike across the Rockies. Kevin grew up in Oakland.
  • Triplets of Belleville: An artsy animated flick about bikes, New York and Paris.
  • Big: Tom Hanks is from Oakland!
  • Bicycle Bride: A new film about bikes, a bride and San Francisco.
  • The Searchers: A classic Western. Clint Eastwood attended Oakland Technical High School.
  • WOBO Hosts "Winning Campaigns" Advocacy Training October 15th-17th – Sign Up Now!

This October, the Alliance for Biking and Walking is coming to Oakland to do their incredible advocacy training called "Winning Campaigns." Many of WOBO's leaders have traveled to attend this training, and we loved it so much we wanted to bring it to Oakland. The training will be offered the weekend of October 15th-17th in downtown Oakland. It's an excellent opportunity to gain tools for bike and pedestrian advocacy and campaign strategy, not to mention the chance to get to know other advocates and learn about efforts to improve biking and walking in their communities.

The training is specifically designed to workshop your fabulous ideas for improving walking and biking in your community, with topics including:

    • Choosing the right issue
    • Having productive meetings
    • Strategy and power-mapping
    • Choosing the right message

At the end of the training, participants emerge with draft campaign plans they can take to the streets to start to bring change in their neighborhood. Please join us and learn how you can turn your ideas into action for a better Oakland! You can register online here.

Want to support the training? We need generous hosts to put up out-of-town trainees during the weekend, as well as volunteers and food donations. Email shannon@wobo.org or call 510-338-2937 to find out how you can help.

Fun Links: A Bendy Bike and One for the Ladies

Bikes may not grow on trees, but designer Kevin Scott has invented one which can wrap around them. From this article in Britian's Daily Mail:

"[Kevin] used a ratchet system built into the frame of the bike to allow it to wrap around a pole, enabling the lock to be wrapped through both wheels and the frame. Securing all the bike's components within the lock was his aim in creating the new bike. It also allows the bike to be stored in small spaces."

Also, while at a mini-sidewalk celebration in San Francisco, I discovered something made in the Bay specifically engineered for bike-riding ladies. They're called pedal panties – the idea being that ladies shouldn't have to choose between feeling comfortable and looking fashionable.

They look pretty solid (with a low-profile tri short chamois), but since I'm not a lady I didn't take this item for a test run. That means any further investigation is up to you. If you'd like to see what they look like, there are photos on the Pedal Panties site. (NOTE: The website is safe for work, as long as two photos of a woman in non-revealing underwear is considered "safe" where you work.)
