Action Alert: Send an Email to Ensure Federal Funds Support Bike/Ped Projects

Bike LaneThe Obama Administration is calling for an economic recovery package that will include funding for local transportation infrastructure. The City of Oakland's "wish list" includes repaving streets, improving sidewalks, and repairing curb ramps. Unfortunately, the pressure to spend economic recovery funds quickly may mean bypassing the critical coordination between City traffic engineers and the bicycle/pedestrian planners.

Join Walk Oakland Bike Oakland in holding the City to its commitment to prioritize repaving streets on the bike network, and to work with the bicycle-pedestrian staff to ensure that all plans approved provide for pedestrians and cyclists and follow the elements of the Bicycle Master Plan and Pedestrian Master Plan. Follow this link and you'll find a letter to the Oakland City Council which you can personalize and email. Let your voice be heard!

Take the Lane – It's Your Right!

Taking the lane (i.e. entering the flow of motor traffic for your own protection) can seem intimidating at times, but it's your right. If you need to take the lane, don't hesitate. The California Vehicle Code (CVC 21200) says:

"You have the right to take the lane if the street width doesn't allow cars and bikes to travel comfortably side by side. You may also take the lane to avoid hazardous conditions like debris, broken pavement, and parked cars (door hazard). Otherwise you must keep to the right unless you're riding at the normal speed of traffic."
And remember, "dooring" is always the fault of the person opening the door, since it's their responsibility to check and see that the coast is clear (CVC 22517).

A Bike Lane That Travels with You

Laser-Projection Virtual Bike LaneThis concept: a laser-drawn bike lane that's projected behind your bike, is nothing short of brilliant. Sadly, it's still just an idea at the moment. But if you're looking for futuristic lighting that dramatically improves your visibility, you can get the Down Low Glow, which is designed and produced locally.

Tell Us About Your Group, Club or Event

We hear tell of all kinds of things going on in Oakland: weekly rides, walking tours, neighborhood groups meeting up... we've even heard of evening bike polo matches. There's one thing we lack: details. If you have a bike/ped-related event, group or meeting you'd like people to know about just drop us a line. We can put your event or activity up on our events calendar, and if you don't want any publicity we'd still like to make your acquaintance. Email: Alec (at) WalkOaklandBikeOakland (dot) org.

Fun Links: How to Walk, How Not to Walk

Think being a pedestrian is scary? Well, you might after watching this educational film from the 1940's called When You Are a Pedestrian. It'll make you wonder how you ever survived the mean streets without it.

So you don't get to thinking that walking is all doom and gloom, here's a video that's intentionally funny. It's Monty Python's classic "Ministry of Silly Walks" sketch, starring a very young John Cleese.

Want to Get More Involved with WOBO?

WOBO is always looking for more folks to get involved with our all-volunteer crew!  Here's how you can help:

  • Join the WOBO Group on Facebook and let us know what you think, do or feel when it comes to walking and biking in Oakland. Your pet peeves, favorite walks and rides, areas that need improvement – we want to hear from you!
  • Can you volunteer for any of the following positions? We especially need help with our campaign to create a bike corridor on Broadway:

Like what you see? We'd like to grow the WOBO membership – forward this message to a friend!
