WOBO Meeting - Aug 26th, 6:30 - 8:00pm

Join us for strategizing on WOBO's campaign to connect bike lanes from upper Broadway into downtown onto Franklin and Webster. We need ideas, energy and volunteers - that's you! Meet us at VO's Vietnamese Restaurant at the corner of Webster and Grand Ave.  VO's is providing a separate room for us, and folks are welcome to order dinner.

Help us determine our best strategy to close this vital link in Oakland\'s bike network, and plan an advocacy ride and picnic for the fall. FREE BART t-shirt to all who turn up!

Location: Vo\'s Restaurant (Webster & Grand)  For more information, contact roger@walkoaklandbikeoakland.org.

Campaign Goal:
Install bike lanes on Broadway from Highway 24 to MacArthur and from 27th via Webster and Franklin to Eighth Street to create a continuous north south bike route almost FIVE miles long! See the interactive maps on the WOBO webpage
here.

Campaign Overview:

  • The City has already done the 'heavy lifting' and completed an Environmental Impact Report, which includes a feasibility study for this project.
  • This is not a project that involves expensive or extensive work. We can get it done in the next year - by June 2009.

Can't attend the meeting, but want to help? Take Action!  Click here to send the City Council a clear message that it's time to put some paint on the pavement!  For more information, contact roger@walkoaklandbikeoakland.org.

New Guerilla Sharrow on 20th Street at Broadway

So we’re not exactly sure who did it, but an anonymous bike activist forwarded WOBO these photos along with some simple text:  “20th at Broadway before sharrow and with sharrow.”

While WOBO does not condone such illegal measures to install bicycle and pedestrian improvements, we did check it out and whoever did it did a pretty nice job.  This is a busy area where many bicyclists board the 19th Street BART station and it is nice to have some bicycle improvement in this area.  It would be great if the city could install some more.

Summer Streets - A great short film about the New York City car free days

Feeling remarkably similar to Bogota's Ciclovia, the New York City Department of Transportation held its first Summer Streets event on Saturday by opening 7 miles of city streets to pedestrians and bike traffic only. From 7 AM to 1 PM, roads were car-free from 72nd Street to the Brooklyn Bridge with Park Avenue serving as the backbone of the route. Our Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan is the real deal - she spent the entire day riding a bike around the course (and even said some nice things about me to my mom.)

A page has been turned, clearly there is no doubt: the future will hold many more large scale street openings for pedestrians, cyclists, runners, children, dog walkers, dancers, and any other reasonable livable space use.

Upcoming Events:

Oakland Art and Soul Festival - Aug 30th-Sept 1st

Ride to beautiful downtown Oakland and enjoy great music, food, and culture. Leave your car behind and valet park you bike for free at the at the 14th & Broadway entrance.

Oakland A’s Fan Rally – Aug 30th

Folks at the Village Bicycle are organizing an Oakland A’s Fan Rally that will highlight the history of the Oakland Athletics in their hometown.  It’s going to be big, fun, and family friendly.  They’re making costumes, games, noisemakers, and bikes with grills on the back for tailgating.
