Victory on Harrison!
We have been active working to make 27th St. and Harrison safer for school children, seniors, residents, and shoppers at the new Whole Foods. Many thanks to Councilmember Nadel for committing funds to install a new stoplight on Harrison between Whole Foods and the Westlake Middle School. This campaign milestone goes a long way toward improving neighborhood quality of life. Help us do more by making a tax-deductible
donation today!

Broadway is Broad Enough for All of Us!
It's about time for a downtown connection to/from North Oakland. Let's get some bike lanes on upper Broadway to downtown, Franklin and Webster. Broadway is a neighborhood street, not a freeway. Let's slow it down and make it a better street for walking and biking.
Check out the full details including our new interactive maps
here.

Convenient and Secure Bike Parking Needed
These days, it's easier to find parking for a Hummer than it is for a bike. Anyone who likes to travel by bike to their favorite Oakland shopping district has surely noticed that most parking meters we used to lock our bikes to have been removed. Find out what happened and what you can do about it on our campaign page

We need your help with these campaigns. Can you make a contribution to our campaigns to make Oakland a safer place for biking and walking? Your contribution of at least $20 gets you a great Oakland map, cool stickers, and the thrill of knowing you are making our city a better place. Support our efforts.

bike to work day 2008 logo.jpg

Bike to Work Day is Thursday, May 15th, 2008.

Join us at Frank Ogawa Plaza in front of City Hall. If you can volunteer to work at WOBO's booth, contact jen@walkoaklandbikeoakland.org.

It's Cool to Pedal Pool

If you are cycling to work on Bike to Work Day, consider joining your district’s City Council representative in your local Pedal Pool.

Check out the route map and lots of other details about Oakland's Bike to Work Day (pancake breakfast, energy stations, bike shop discounts, calendar of events in May). City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente, of District 5, will ride for the first time this year, and we hope that Larry Reid will join us, too.  If you live in District 7 please contact Larry Reid at lreid@oaklandnet.com and encourage him to ride.

Volunteer needed to Lead District 7 Pedal Pool
The District 7 Pedal Pool needs a volunteer to lead the ride.  If you live in the district or would be willing to ride out there and lead the group to Fruitvale please contact Jennifer Stanley at
jstanley@oaklandnet.com

WOBO Party @ Mama Buzz May 16th

WOBO will be hosting a shin dig Friday May 16th (not on Bike to Work Day) from 5 pm until the party stops at Mama Buzz 2318 Telegraph. Music will be spinning, beverages will be consumed, and you can get up to speed on key bicycle and ped project in Oaktown that you want to see happen.  More information on the WOBO calendar.

Come to WOBO's Monthly Meeting on Wednesday, May 7

Join a great group of people working to improve walking and biking in Oakland. New folks are always welcome to join us for food, drinks and discussion and planning.  Bring your ideas, enthusiasm, and energy! The Walk Oakland Bike Oakland Steering Committee meets once/month at La Estrallita Cafe and Bar at 446 E 12th St. in Oakland on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm. Next meeting is May 7.  La Estrallita is just 6 blocks from the Lake Merritt BART station.  For more information, contact roger@walkoaklandbikeoakland.org.

Want to get More Involved?

WOBO is always looking for more folks to get involved with our all-volunteer crew! Here's how you can help:

  • Create Some Buzz about Mama Buzz Party: It's time to get local walkers and bikers together for some good (clean?) fun. We need your help getting the word out about our May 16 party at Mama Buzz, starting with giving out postcards at Oakland's Art Murmur on the first Friday in May - contact Mike at mike@walkoaklandbikeoakland.org.
  • Helping plan a "Car Free Day" event in tandem with Bike to Work Day in May: Mike is working with the City to get this started. Contact him at mike@walkoaklandbikeoakland.org.
  • Can you volunteer for any of the following positions? If so, contact Roger at roger@walkoaklandbikeoakland.org.
    • Social chair (socialista)
    • Membership coordinator
    • Outreach coordinator
    • Campaign managers
    • Web content and development
    • Graphic design (think tshirts, cards, postcards, posters, etc.)
    • Volunteer / intern coordinator

Cyclist Awareness - Are You Seeing What I'm Seeing?

What does basketball have to do with bicycling? Find out by checking out this clever London Transport video on cyclist awareness.  It's short, sweet, and makes a good point. It's also really funny. Some of us even guffawed!

Like what you see? We'd like to grow the WOBO membership. Forward this message to a friend
