Greetings \{FIRST_NAME\},

Tell your Councilmembers to Pass and Implement the Bicycle Plan at the Community Economic and Development Agency (CEDA) meeting on November 13th.

The Oakland Community Economic and Development Agency (CEDA) City Council committee is meeting and will discuss the Bike Plan on Tuesday, November 13th at 4pm.  WOBO is looking for folks to attend and tell the Councilmembers to both pass and implement the updated Bicycle plan.

While we're not so worried about it passing at the City Council level, NOW is the right time to leverage discussion of the Bicycle Plan within the Council to get some meaningful changes so that we can actually implement the Bike Plan.  It won't do Oakland any good to have a great plan on paper that doesn't get implemented, much like the last version of the Bike Plan.

The bike plan is the first substantial item on the agenda
next Tuesday, November 13th at the Hearing Room 1, 1st Floor, Oakland City Hall.  The meeting is currently scheduled for 4pm, so we expect this item to be in discussed by 4:10.
Please come to the CEDA meeting and give your comments.  See the talking points below.

Contact Your City Councilmember and Ask them to Implement the Bike Plan.

The Oakland City Councilmembers who sit on the CEDA committee are:

  • Jane Brunner, District 1
  • President De La Fuente, District 5
  • Larry Reid, District 7
  • Henry Chang, Jr. At-Large
If you live in one of these districts, we especially need you to contact your Councilmember.  Don't know who your Councilmember is?  Click here to find Your Councilperson.

City Council/CEDA Talking Points

We need to get our key message across to the City Council regarding:

  • Bike lanes - Oakland is updating its 1999 Bicycle Plan - we need to raise the awareness among our electeds in City Hall to get priority projects like Telegraph Ave. and East 12th built and the entire bike plan implemented!!
  • Push for back-filling the now vacant bike-ped position in the Community Economic and Development Agency (CEDA). Until a few months ago, the City had 3 bike-ped staff, but due to a retirement and promotion, we're down to two. We need that position filled so that new development (especially along the big corridors like Broadway and Telegraph) has some bike-ped input and oversight.kiosk.jpg
  • Push for full funding of bike racks on all blocks that where there is not sufficient bike parking in place.  As the city removes more and more parking meters and replaces them with these electronic parking kiosks, there won't be anywhere to park bikes anymore.  The necessary racks (average 2/block) will cost $200,000. Basic racks are $200 installed.
    • We want the city to commit $150,000 from either the increased parking revenue or the city budget (program is currently entirely grant funded) to cover the funding gap identified above.
    • With WOBO's support, the city's pedestrian/bicycle program staff has secured a $50,000 grant to install ~250 bicycle racks throughout the city.

Like what you see? We'd like to grow the WOBO membership. Forward this message to a friend
